Onsen etiquette in Japan

Clear, simple etiquette rules for onsen: washing, towels, phones, hair, and common mistakes to avoid.

Onsen etiquette is mostly about hygiene and keeping a calm atmosphere. If you follow the basics below, you will be fine at most facilities.

Wash first, always

Do a full wash (soap + rinse) at the shower stations before entering any bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette.

Keep towels out of the bath

Small towels are for washing and modesty. Do not put them in the water. Many people fold the towel and place it on their head.

No photos, no phones

Bathing areas are private spaces. Do not bring a phone into the bathing room, and never take photos.

Tie up long hair

If you have long hair, tie it up so it does not touch the bath water.

Be mindful of the atmosphere

Avoid loud conversations. Do not swim. Do not dive. Keep your time in the bath relaxing for everyone.

Tattoos: confirm the facility policy

Tattoos are a facility-by-facility decision. Some allow them, some require cover-up stickers, and some only permit private baths. When in doubt, ask staff or choose a facility with an official public policy statement.
